St Joe's Concert Great Success

Well, I really couldn't be happier with how the concert went! It was great fun to play with St Joe's on a really nice instrument (a Steinbach Grand Piano) (even though some of the keys started sticking towards the end! :S ). We played pretty well, if I do say so myself. :D Photos were taken, so hopefully I can put some up soon!

For those of you who were there, please leave a comment, tell us what u think. :) The floor's open...

Oh, and, St Joe's 160th Anniversary CD, 23 Percy Street is now available. Get yours today for only $20! ;)

  • It was absolutely tops! Gotta love jazz hey... and yes I bought the CD.

Since I did ensemble at uni this year.. here is my critque...

    Good points:

I was impressed by the level of colour that was used in some of the chordal progressions that Thomas was playing. In fact, at one pivotal moment of the song, there was so much colour, that I'm pretty sure he was just hitting random keys! Correct me if I'm wrong :-p

The arrangement was really good. I loved the use of dynamics, sudden changes in registers, texture, and chordal colour.

The vocals were tops as well. Especially Fiora Culter... She put the icing on the cake. Ohh cake.. Now I'm hungry! Also the impromptue solo by Mark Saunders rocked the show.

I was most impressed by Marks conducting.. he just does it so awesomely!

    Area's for improvement...

Although the levels were really great most of the time, I felt a little let down by them... I spent about 1/4 - 1/3 of the time trying to hear the guitar, and most of the time I couldn't. Also, Mel's volume needed to be boosted for her solos. Appart from the the leves were tops.

WHERE WAS THE BASS GUITAR SOLO? Tension was built by leaving the guitar solo until the end of the first half of the evening... however much more tension was produce by leaving the bass solo untli the very end... as in after the show... I was so hanging out for a shreding bass guitar solo.

My fianl area for improvement would be to get a much more excited audience. St. Joes certainly deserved a standing ovation. I gave them one, but the rest of the crowd wasn't there with me! Let down :-p Only kidding.

    So wrapping up...

    Tuning: 10/0
    dynamics 9/10
    Balance 8/10
    Tightness 10/10
    Leadership 9/10
    Communication 9.5/10
    Overall 9.5/10

    Great job guys!!
